Lately God's given me a fresh view of the "Unchangeableness of His character" that "I AM for you Sue… I AM in the details of your journey, expect Me to show up to defend and protect your purpose. I have created you for this." With each 'crisis of belief' I have witnessed this reality and God's track record stands faultless. He _is_ "for" me and I trust that more every day. Now in my 4th year of full time ministry, I find that I look for Him in every detail and _can_ relax in all things. Nothing escapes His notice …feathers and pedals - Matthew 6. Resting secure, abiding confidently in Him, now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

Watching God use our boo-boos to shine His light and testify of His goodness leaves me short on words (believe it). The Holy Spirit gives a hunger to these men and women to be set free and experience freedom from the misery of their addictive condition. They show up and God feeds their hungry souls with hope to become what He designed them to be… free before His throne, blameless. Blessed and highly favored, who wouldn't want that!!!

Stories of Recovery: Transformed

My story is one of God's transforming power, on both the inside of my heart and the outside of my heart. Over 2 years ago I recommitted my life to Christ. Wounds from my childhood influenced choices I made as a young girl, as a young adult and an adult--wounds that started in my mother's womb. My parents were expecting, the heart beat was strong and thus the thought was they were going to have a boy. Two months premature they received identical twin girls. My parents unintentionally projected onto me the boy they never received. This began in my mother's womb, and at a very young age I began to learn how to perform to feel valued, to be recognized, to obtain affirmation in order to not feel rejected or alone. I became my Dad's buddy, his helper and an "affirmation junky." He taught me how to play sports: basketball, baseball, golf, football. I even received a complete football uniform, helmet, shoulder pads and jersey on my 5th Christmas--my identical twin sister received a doll with all the accessories. I quickly became a "tom-girl", playing with the neighborhood boys. I wore more masculine clothing and was not really interested in wearing dresses even though my Mom did try at first. As I moved into Elementary school it became harder for me to relate to the boys and somewhat difficult to relate to the girls, so I started to become an "introvert" and isolate. My identity had been violated.

Treasures of the Soul: The Keepsake of Boundaries

Let's spend a little time on boundaries! The key to learning boundaries is in understanding the purpose and use of boundaries. If we understand this, then applying boundaries are much easier.
I call these the "Treasures of the Soul: the Keepsake of Boundaries".

So the first treasure we will look at is our ability/power to think what I think. Now we have been given the ability to think since childhood, yet often we have had that ability stolen from us.

Often we have been told what to or not to think and shamed when we had a thought that some adult thought was silly, wrong, or even child-like. When we are children of course we will think childlike, that is natural. And even today when we are thinking that something seems wrong with reality, or at least something someone else says is reality, we have been shamed into giving up our thinking and capitulating to someone else's way of thinking. The danger in this is that we often gravitate into systems, relationships, or marriages that we allow to think for us, or tell us what to think.

And we remain dependent on them to think for us.

It is time to take back our ability to think, at times even being wrong with that ability - it is okay. There is nothing wrong with making mistakes with the way we think; there is everything wrong with giving up our ability to think all together. That renders us at the mercy of the thinking of others. I don't know about you but if I have to live this life of mine, then I will do it with my own thinking. This by no means indicates that I don't test my thinking out with someone I trust and respect, I do! I run my thinking past my sponsor, counselor, spouse, clinical peers and mentors in business. However; when I walk away from that conversation it is clear to me that the decision is mine and my thoughts are mine, because it is my life that it effects.

I am reclaiming my life one decision and thought at a time.

Meet the Board: Nancy Yacher

L.I.F.E. Ministries International is led by a five member board with varying backgrounds and life experiences. You may know the L.I.F.E. Ministries' Leadership Team, but we want to introduce you to the board; today, we share an interview with Brockwell Bone, editor, and Board Member Nancy Yacher.

Brockwell: God has led many of us through educational, relational, and other experiences to make us who we are; what experiences do you feel have led you to serving on the Board at L.I.F.E. Ministries?

Nancy: My family pattern growing up was to keep family emotional secrets, meaning we could not speak of feeling, think about feelings, or feel--a familiar story. The religious way to handle questions was to be stoic, and the intellectual environment my father came from through his graduate training was effectively New Age. My own Christian conversion from "spirituality" to Christianity has shown me the amazing help toward emotional health that comes from living out the life of Christ in us.

Brockwell: God has blessed each of us with unique skills and passions; what do you feel is the gift or skill He wants you to use most while serving the ministry?

Nancy: Because my father was a college professor of English, my mother a teacher of French and Spanish, and my own experience as a Danforth Graduate Fellow during my graduate training in American civilization, I have been thinking about historical and social patterns of behavior as presented in stories and related to Christian groups. Following my grandmother's tradition, I enjoy hosting groups, helping people meet other people, and supporting students by being available off campus to connect and share interests when they come to me. These social connection skills and social behavior research allow me to understand the disconnection of addiction.

Brockwell: Nancy, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Nancy: Reading has always been recreation for me, especially biographies, Christian experience literature, and mysteries. I enjoy cooking imaginatively with local, seasonal food, going to plays and concerts on campus. A walk in the state park at Clinton Lake near my home with friends or with my dog is always a pleasure. I also sing in the Lawrence Civic Choir for concerts and on performance trips. And most of all, being in touch with my two sons and their families; I am blessed with five grandchildren.

Brockwell: What other Boards and organizations have you served?

Nancy: I have served at Trinity In-Home Care in my community, as well as having been on the Board of the campus Episcopal center and organized or participated in conferences on the writings of C.S. Lewis as it relates to college curriculum. Lewis is considered the "foremost Christian apologist" of the 20th century, and presented the theology and philosophy of the Christian past in Western civilization. Being able to teach his works was God's way of letting me make amends for so much of the anti-Christian teaching in the humanities these days. And students DID want that material, despite my being challenged about it's being relevant or accurate or politically correct. I see that hunger as one of God's messages to both my family and the department that this, material, too, is important. I also have delivered papers at several academic conferences, including one at Cambridge University in England, at the C.S. Lewis Foundation Summer Institute.

Fallen: A Pastor's Story of Recovery

Forgive me for beginning where I must, but I have been studying the life of David for obvious reasons: a man after God's own heart...a leader of God's people...A man who committed adultery.
The Psalms are full of David's thoughts prior to his sin, his pain and despair from the consequences of his sin, and his reflections of God's goodness after his redemption from his sin. But what I have found most interesting was this excerpt from Psalm 38:16-18

"For I said, 'Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips.' For I am about to fall and my pain is ever within me. I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin."
Before everything came crashing down, I had this sense that something big and terrible was coming at me. And I knew that when it hit me, it was going to hit me hard, and it was going to hurt. I wanted to get out of the way, but for reasons I am still learning about, I couldn't make myself move.

Why was I so vulnerable to a fate I did not want but could not avoid? The reasons are multiple and deep and they overlap in many different and complex ways...but the primary reason I was so vulnerable was that there was no one in my life close enough to me who could see the approaching danger and help me get out of harm's way. There were a few people who had tried to get that close...but I never let anyone in.

Perhaps this is where you find yourself; troubled by your sin, fearful of the pain and destruction your sin will ultimately bring, but without a person close enough to you who can see the urgency of the moment and help you escape the destruction that you know is descending upon you. If this is you, please understand that I know about this place. It is a terribly lonely and intimidating place. But I want to join you there, without great sounding logic, moral condemnation, or impatient demands. I just want to be present with you so that together we can find safety.

The Eagles have always been one of my favorite bands from the 70's. One of their most popular songs is Desperado, and in that song there is a line that says, "your prison is walking through this world all alone." I never realized how true that was until I stopped walking through life all alone. Before, I dealt with life by isolating myself from others. Now, I regularly engage other men and we "do life" together.

Given my own experience, I doubt there is a better way to close than to quote the last line of the song Desperado...

"you'd better let somebody love you, before itâ€™s too late."

Walk in the Light Conference Review

The Walk in the Light 2010 conference was more energizing and fulfilling than we could have ever imagined!

We want to thank the participants for making this conference a success and traveling across the country from as far away as Maryland and Arizona. This conference hosted individuals in recovery, facilitators - even entire leadership groups came! Participants enjoyed opportunities to network during lunch and drew strength knowing others were alongside them in this battle to restore purity. Counselors and pastors alike were also equipped to better serve and challenge in their sphere of influence.

As testimonies were made throughout each day, there was a glorious witness to Godâ€™s power and goodness that declared lives can be changed through recovery. The Lordâ€™s presence was felt throughout the conference but there was a particularly sweet time of prayer after a family testimony when men and women came forward laying down their guard to let the Holy Spirit fill their souls. O how the Lord encourages us through you!

Participants graciously gave essential feedback and encouraging comments that helps us hold fast to the vision that God has given L.I.F.E. Ministries. We are so grateful and humbled to provide L.I.F.E. Recovery Training with cutting edge research and recovery information at a level of excellence that can only come from Him. We admit through this process we most assuredly will continue to accumulate considerable amounts of valuable material, so we are reorganizing the format to deliver this information in a more palatable format. Press Release: Sexual Addiction Recovery Conference Scheduled

Orlando, Florida â€“ June 4, 2010 â€“ L.I.F.E. Ministries, a sexual addiction recovery ministry, is holding its second annual sexual addiction recovery conference â€“ Walk in the Light 2010. The conference program includes topics and workshops for anyone who is interested in sexual addiction recovery including concerned persons, support group members, group facilitators, pastors and counselors. This two day event will be held at Center Pointe Church in Orlando, Florida starting July 9th.

â€œThe 2009 event confirmed that an annual gathering of this nature was very much needed. This year, we have expanded the event to two full days of conference presentations, workshops, and a special guest speaker on Friday night,â€ reports Sue Moore, L.I.F.E. Affiliate Director and conference coordinator. Moore explains that the topics covered will educate and inspire anyone involved or interested in sexual addiction recovery. Last month, I was camping with my Cub Scout and missed our church’s sermon on 1 Peter 4:7-11. Peter writes of casting all anxiety upon God. When I read this, I hear – “let go and let God”. In recovery, that is easier said than done; Peter continues, “Be self-controlled and alert” (v. 8a). Now we’re talking, Peter reinforces that yes, we should entrust our addictions to God, but we must also do our part – staying alert of triggers and remaining on our recovery path with self-control.

Over a year ago I began describing the concept of sexual addiction as an umbrella of coping mechanisms similar to the beverage alternatives of the alcoholic and noticed the audience easily understood the scope and inclination of sexual addiction behaviors. Shortly thereafter I placed the illustration into our training presentation and realized as I communicated the idea the connection of our shame, abandoned value, fear and doubt would be like the originating cloud and raindrops of this scenario. Praise God for such a clear picture of not only the sexual addiction behaviors, but all coping mechanisms as our response to the lies we believe.

Teen Boys Becoming Predators Due to Porn

The absurd notion that pornography is just “harmless fun” has suffered a couple of setbacks in the past few weeks. According to press reports in the United Kingdom, the complete rejection of that belief cannot happen soon enough.

The British newspaper Daily Mail, in its digital Mail Online, reported in their recent article “Teen boys watching hours of internet pornography every week are treating their girlfriends like sex objects” (3/8/10) that teenage girls in London have themselves revived the concept of a chaperone for protection from the sexual demands of boyfriends who are growing up on porn.

According to teens and experts, the pervasiveness of online pornography is quite literally changing young men into sexual predators, leaving young women seeking refuge—tearfully, in some cases—in a Jane Austen-like manner and desperately desiring their parents’ guidance.

Statistically Speaking: Porn and its Effects

The enemy uses sexual immorality to destroy God’s people. Paul specifically cites sexual immorality in his letters to the churches of the nations, often the first or only sin he specifies.

According to the Associated Press, most Americans (90%) believe that adultery is wrong, yet internet pornography use, a non-relational form of adultery, increases each year. Christians are not immune to this, as 47% of Christians say pornography is a major problem at home, and 37% of pastors say they personally struggle. And it’s not just men—one out of six women struggle with a pornography addiction too, and fully one-third of visitors to adult websites are women.

Pornography is not only spiritually destructive to an individual and devastating to a marriage, but can and does lead to infidelity, which is the cause of 17 percent of divorces in the United States (AP).

The enemy is using sexual temptation to destroy families across the country! And the culture is helping to plant those seeds early, as 80% of 15-17 year olds are having hard-core experiences, and 90% of 8-16 year olds have viewed pornography online, most while doing homework.

Statistics show more than 72,000 sexually explicit sites on the web and an estimated 266 new porn sites being added each day. These sites alone generate revenue of $1 billion dollars each year, according to the Harding Institute.

And it is estimated that $2.5 billion in annual US revenue is related to internet porn.

L.I.F.E. Ministries uses the internet, our primary communication method, to offer hope and tools to combat this wide-spread (and growing) pandemic. Each year, our staff and volunteers, based in homes and offices across several states, operate this ministry on about $80,000.

Globalizing God’s Army to Battle Sexual Addiction

This global initiative will allow L.I.F.E. to reach over half of the world’s population with Men’s, Women’s and Spouses workbook materials. To further facilitate this vision, we will be taking our Training and Certification Program on-line, to better equip the international community for ministry in the area of sexual addiction. L.I.F.E. Resources, Programs, and Operations

Last month, L.I.F.E. Ministries shared its financial operations, new resources, and upcoming programs. All three of these, and continued operations of the ministry, require prayer and financial support. We thank those that pray with us daily at 9 am and/or 9 pm EST for this ministry.

L.I.F.E. Ministries has an operating budget of less than one hundred thousand dollars annually. We are spread about the country in mostly home-based offices. This ministry survives and flourishes on your prayers and financial support.

Each new resource that L.I.F.E. develops (Facilitator DVDs, L.I.F.E. Guide revisions, CDs) have an upfront cost and continued supply costs. This has allowed us to prioritize, fully develop, and professional create resources as finances are available.

Press Release: Facilitator Training for Sexual Addiction Recovery Groups

L.I.F.E. Ministries’ facilitator training calls are returning to help facilitators of sexual addiction recovery groups learn more about facilitating their groups, spend time with other facilitators, and receive support from L.I.F.E. Ministries, a sexual addiction recovery ministry.

Last year, L.I.F.E. Ministries conducted a test-run of monthly telephone conferences designed to help facilitators of L.I.F.E. sexual addiction recovery support groups. Glen W., a seasoned facilitator in Orlando, hosted the men’s facilitator training calls. Melissa Haas, author of the L.I.F.E. Guide for Spouses, hosted the spouse’s facilitator training calls.

This program leads participants through a monthly lesson, and then the call opens up for a question-answer session. Many participants have found this free resource extremely valuable, used it as a support in their lives, and find it a way to stay connected with L.I.F.E. Headquarters.

L.I.F.E. Ministries is a Christ-centered support group ministry whose mission is to encourage, empower, and equip God’s people to live everyday in sexual integrity. L.I.F.E. continues to be on the frontline in helping those struggling with sexual addiction take back their lives—one person and one life at a time through their L.I.F.E. For several months, you have read about L.I.F.E.’s vision of building an army to combat sexual addiction.

We revisited the original vision of L.I.F.E. when Johna Hale, our Executive Director, stood with the Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane and as far as she could see, people of all races came marching forward in an army. The Lord told her that this is the army that He is calling out to fight the war against sexual addiction within the Christian community.

I shared my inspiration from Him for the methods and ways of raising this army. And that L.I.F.E. Ministries no longer exists only to encourage, empower, and equip; L.I.F.E. is now moving toward the recruiting and training of warriors, and coordinating the attack on sexual sin and bondage.

Preparing the battlefield with prayer is the next step and I want to thank those that began and continue to pray since the call for prayer last November.

For those wanting to participate, we hope that you will consider prayer at 9:00 am EST or 9 pm EST. Understanding that lives are busy, to remind yourself, you can place a sticky note in your day planner or create a reminder in your calendar software of choice.

L.I.F.E. Ministries is a network of support groups based in churches across the globe connected to our central Headquarters. Group Facilitators are a critical link in ministry communications and operations – setting up and running their group and staying connected with Headquarters.
Facilitators, we have many free resources to help you on your mission of spreading sexual integrity. The newest resources are our monthly Facilitator Training Calls (men and spouses).

We have had great feedback about these calls and plan to continue them in January, after the holiday season.

Participants dial into a conference call, spend about a half an hour listening to a seasoned facilitator speak about a particular topic and then participate in questions and answers for another half an hour. Men’s and spouse’s facilitator call schedules can be found in the Facilitator’s Area of our website.

Another free resource that we offer is email support through our website. Group facilitators can login to the website and submit a question to a L.I.F.E. Headquarters representative. They can also select the urgency of the matter in case they are in a potentially toxic situation. Email support is available in the Facilitator’s Area of our website.

The final resource I want to talk about is free downloads. From the Feelings Wheel to Sexual Addiction Self Tests, these downloads are available to you from any computer so that you have access when you need it. Downloads are available in the Facilitator’s Area of our website.

Mobilizing an Army of Warriors - the Leader/Facilitator Role

The L.I.F.E. Ministries leadership team, including our Director of Development, attended the Willow Creek Leadership Summit early in August. There were over a hundred thousand attendees from around the world, most of them via satellite. Bob and I have attended several Summits throughout the years, but I have never heard such urgency from all the speakers about fulfilling God’s purposes for our lives. The first words spoken by Bill Hybels, the pastor of Willow Creek Community Church were “We need to advance God’s purposes on earth.”

Immediately, my thoughts were that the Lord’s mandate for L.I.F.E. Ministries is to advance God’s purpose of preparing the Body of Christ to be the Pure Bride of Christ—without spot or wrinkle.All of us who are a part of L.I.F.E. Ministries certainly know that that is our purpose, and that to fulfill that purpose we need to mobilize an army of warriors to fight the assault from the enemy that tries to keep the Bride from being pure.

In the original vision I had in the Garden of Gethsemane, I was kneeling down at the rock with Jesus and I cried out: “not my will but thy will be done.” Then Jesus and I rose from the rock and I stood beside Him as a line as far as I could see of people of all races came marching forward in an army. The Lord told me that this is the army that He is calling out to fight the war against sexual addiction within the Christian community. You are a part of that army, and we so appreciate your participation. In the months to come, we will be telling you how you can help increase the size and effectiveness of this army.

The first thing that we can to do to better prepare for battle is to make our actions as leaders/facilitators lead to the things that matter to God. “Let our light shine and give glory to the Lord.”

When we place our hope in who God is and what He asks us to do, then He is responsible to get it done.

Leadership bears the responsibility to give back to others from the same freedom in which you received ministry. Then empower them to step up and facilitate that same healing to still others. People want to have meaning and purpose in their lives--that is what Principle Seven is all about. Have them ask the Lord to create a vision and purpose for their lives. Prayerfully, if the Lord so leads, many will want to join the other warriors working with L.I.F.E. People need to align around a mission and then become servant leaders themselves. This helps still others grow to join the army and make a difference in this world.

Tell your story so others will catch the vision, and desire that same freedom for themselves. Rather than remaining a victim of the addiction, they can find that they are to help others to live in freedom. Leadership is to empower others, not to have power over them. We can lead others to this gift by helping them to contribute to something.

As we grow into the army we are called to be, one of our most powerful weapons is love. In many ways this army is like other armies in devotion, discipline, focus, training, seriousness, and so on; but in some basic ways it is unlike any other army. The weapons of this army are not like any human weapons, but are divinely powerful. We do not hate our enemies—we love them! We do not fight to kill but to give life—not to conquer, but to set others free.

L.I.F.E. groups need to be an accepting and grace-giving environment for those who are truly seeking healing. We can do this by being an authentic and confessing community, accountable to one another. Without truth coming to the light, we will not have the freedom that the Lord so desires in our lives. L.I.F.E. groups give that safety for the truth to be spoken and the shame to be defused. As leaders, we need to model that transparency. As a leader in this army, you must keep people around you who can speak truth and accountability into your life. Always be teachable to continue to grow in the likeness of Jesus.
Bill Hybels said that callings are precious and holy things. Let us be lights to shine in the darkness more than ever. Nehemiah Principle Four
I also said to him, "If it pleases you, may I take some letters with me? I want to give them to the governors of the land west of the Euphrates River. Then they'll help me travel safely through their territory until I arrive in Judah. "May I also have a letter to Asaph? He takes care of your forest. He asked for help for his journey, he knew he needed safe passage to get back to Jerusalem, the Jews were slaves in the land and Nehemiah knew that no one would believe that he was speaking the truth, if he made this journey without letters from King Artaxerxes, he could be captured by another King and forced to be his slave, or charged with escape and be put to death.

Holiday Book Buying

With Christmas not far off L.I.F.E. Ministries realizes that although we celebrate Jesus Christ as the reason for the season, purchasing gifts for our friends, family and loved ones is still a wonderful way to show appreciation and love to one another.

Books, music and computer media are always popular and there are great places to buy these items. L.I.F.E. would like to remind everyone that these mega-book store chains and any book store for that matter, are not always the safest places for people in recovery from sexual addiction to browse.

Many of you have been very helpful in relaying the message to us here and we’d like to do our part as well. Please realize that there are safer ways to be “out and about” this holiday season. If you are planning on purchasing books and the like, consider finding the titles, topics or authors you want on the many internet sites selling them.

You can call ahead for the items your thinking about to see if they are available and have them waiting at the register with your name when you arrive. You can ask someone to go with you to these stores to help create some accountability.

And, if you must go and get the book by yourself, let someone in your group or your sponsor know before hand. When you arrive at the store, it may be wise to ask someone who works there to take you to the place where what you’re looking for is located, this might be smarter than simply “launching out” into the store to discover just how much garbage there really is.

New Beginnings

The Lord keeps bringing Isaiah 43:18-19 to my mind, which talks about new beginnings. We entered into the eighth year of L.I.F.E. Ministries in July 2007, and have been reminded that in the Lord’s system eight often means a new beginning. The last seven years were spent in receiving revelation, developing resources and proclaiming the vision that the Lord gave me for this ministry. That was in Israel several years ago, while at the Garden of Gethsemane; and I was kneeling at the rock with Jesus, saying “not my will but thy will be done.” Then Jesus stood up and I stood beside him, and there was a line as far as I could see with people of all nationalities lined up as an army going toward battle. The Lord later told me that the army was being formed to fight the battle of sexual addiction in the church. Of course, that subject was hardly discussed eight years ago.

We have had glimpses of this army the last seven years. One recent glimpse came at the AACC World Conference. We watched our own volunteers and realized the transformation taking place in each of their lives, as they are now serving the Lord instead of being in bondage to shame. I looked at the glow on their faces as they answered questions and served the people; and I realized again that only Jesus could bring this about and that being Jesus to each other in the support groups will continue to bring this growth into full bloom in the next few years. The statistics speak for themselves: even within the Christian community 47% say that pornography is a problem in their home. Sixty to ninety percent of Christian men and one out of three Christian women are sexually addicted. In an anonymous survey conducted by Leadership magazine, seven out of 10 lay leaders in the church admitted to visiting adult Web sites at least once a week. When pastors were asked the same question, four out of 10 said they did the same. Paul Harvey has reported that internet pornography is the fastest growing addiction in the United States, with 82 million visitors to such sites each year; and one-third of those are women. If this isn’t the biggest problem within the church today, I don’t know what is. Pastor Jack Hayford has said that if the church doesn’t address this problem then it will rob the church of its life and power. Consequently, we need to join forces and be the army that keeps that from happening. Preparing for this new season in L.I.F.E. Ministries will involve building and embracing that vision, by reaching out to the people who are called to be a part of this army. How do we do this?

In order to help the large numbers of Christians struggling with sexual addiction; we need to realize more financial support from the groups to be able to enlarge the ministry, do more training, and develop additional resources to provide a close-knit community to support and reinforce the army with skill and love. To start, we are going to send to a survey to some of our largest groups, asking them to identify their needs. We’ll also have these same questions available on our website for all to answer. We will use these answers to set our priorities and address the needs of the recovery community. Also, starting in February, we are going to have a monthly training for the spouses’ and men’s group facilitators, but all can join in this web based training. And we continue to pray for the finances to have an annual L.I.F.E. Ministries conference where we can all get together for further training and to build community. These are just a few of the things that we hope will build and equip the army, and the surveys should tell our headquarters team where we need to put additional efforts as well.

In this eighth year of new beginning, let’s always remember that love will continue to be the greatest key for the church the next 7 years. Let the L.I.F.E. groups demonstrate this love of Jesus to all those in attendance, and to all in the church. I remember that I had to leave the church for several years because of the shame of my own sexual addiction—it wasn’t’ a safe place. Let our groups and our churches be that safe place for all who need this love, because without love we are nothing and whatever we accomplish without it profits nothing (l Cor.13). Let us grow and mature in love as we seek the Lord’s purposes for our lives. Ask God for a vision of how you can minister out of the healing that He is providing for you. Even within Christ’s Church, this cancer is destroying lives and families; and keeping people from their God-given purposes. We pray that you will be a part of this army; fully engaged in this battle to encourage, empower and equip God’s people to live everyday in sexual integrity—to the Glory of the Lord.

The Orientation Guide for Men - The Beginning Journey

Greetings,

Our endeavor to equip and provide tools and resources that are focused on rising up compassionate, powerful and effective Group Facilitators brings L.I.F.E Ministries into a season full of innovative strategic planning. As our culture becomes more and more complacent on sexual depravity, we as Christian Warriors must also respond.

Recently, in my ponderings of how to better serve sexual addicts who muster up enough courage and humility to walk through the door of a sexual addiction support group meeting, the Lord reminded me of my own experience. This is why I’m excited about our new L.I.F.E. Orientation Guide; “The Beginning Journey”.

Remembering my own beginning journey and what it was like when I found an audio lecture or an article that helped minister hope and healing to me about my sexual sin, I began to compile a library of resources I could reflect on as I progressed in recovery. Those articles, books and CD’s became like priceless gems to me in that they helped me gain courage and humility to defeat my pride and denial, and ultimately helped restore my broken relationship with a compassionate and forgiving God.

As a Group Facilitator, I was passionate about having enough of this kind of information to give to a new person who came off the battle field broken, wounded and confused about what was happening in his life. Reaching back into a now vast and diverse collection of articles, devotionals and booklets, I fashioned “welcome packets” for every new person who decided to come to my meetings. It was important to me that these wounded souls could perhaps take home a small “nugget” of hope.

Through time the packet evolved into an educational asset. Many of these wounded souls had spouses, family or loved ones who had questions about sexual addiction and we added intuitive material that helped to “jump start” their understanding of the many “facets” of our addiction, and how all this came to be and what the road to recovery looked like from our perspective at the “starting line”.

The Beginning Journey is a collection of thoughts, articles and concepts that Group Facilitators will find useful in preparing a new member for the journey into the L.I.F.E. Guide and the format of your meeting. Much of this material has been said in other places by other people, but I think that we can all agree that redundancy in recovery is a good thing.

The intent is to provide an integration or orientation tool that will challenge new group members to answer some basic, honest and realistic questions about themselves, their perspective, and their readiness to begin the journey of recovery. The Beginning Journey is divided into a four week, “101” style format. Each new member will be assigned a mentor or temporary sponsor to help answer questions and elaborate on the material. Basic accountability is established in that at the conclusion of each week a challenge is issued by the Guide to the new member that he or she will need to check-in with to the temporary sponsor. The booklet will also provide the Group Facilitator with the opportunity to encourage and share the inclusion process of new members with mature group attendees. This can allow the Principle work of the L.I.F.E. Guide to continue seamlessly for the mainstream of the group.

Finally, and most importantly, the Orientation Guide offers a “no-risk” trial for a new group member who (as I’ve seen so many times before) reaches a reluctance or resistance stage in the early phases of recovery and may pull back or completely quit of the group. This booklet then becomes great “seed” material which can serve as a L.I.F.E. Saver at another time.

The early days, weeks and months of recovery are a delicate and volatile time for addicts, their spouses and families. This integration process can help to resolve some of the “unknowns” that arise. The booklet uses questions to encourage self-reflection and can act as an “internal motive checker”.

The Orientation Guide has been smartly designed to be a modulated tool in that as new concepts, ideas and strategies come forward from people like you, the Group Facilitators, the booklet can be kept fresh, innovative and current with those strategies. Connecting at Conference

The American Association of Christian Counselors hold their World Conference every two years at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. This conference attracts pastors and Christian counselors from across the country, so you can understand the importance of our attendance in September. The L.I.F.E. Ministries booth was located in a prime location that received heavy traffic – and great interest.

The first year that L.I.F.E. attended this event, many people scanned our booth from a distance, quickly diverted their eyes, and walked by very fast. We were the only booth that addressed the issue at the time. Sexual addiction was still an unspoken problem in churches eight years ago. Now, we are one of the most heavily attended booths in the exhibit hall.

This year, rather than a skeleton staff, we had staff and volunteers travel from Florida, Wisconsin, and California to help out at the booth. And the crew was busy! Counselor and pastors would stop and ask questions about the materials, the ministry, and thanked us for the work that L.I.F.E. is doing. In addition, several of our already existing groups came by to share about the fruitful work of their L.I.F.E. support groups.

While there, Bob Hale and I traveled the eight rows of booths and connected with other ministries and organizations that could benefit from our resources. These organizations included residential treatment programs for sexual addiction, ministries for helping pastors with a range of difficulties, and troubled teen programs. We are following up with these contacts to help them integrate L.I.F.E.’s time-tested resources into their existing programs.

Our attendance at AACC’s World Conference creates a strain on the budget every two years as we do not recoup our costs at the conference. But the exposure and awareness pay off in the long run. I Am Fortunate to Have L.I.F.E. (Summer 2007 Newsletter)

I am so privileged to have a group of women to call friends. I am even more privileged to have a group of women called friends who are safe. And not just safe, but real. They are transparent. They let me be transparent. They let me be me. I can be hurt, I can be happy, I can be angry, I can be all the things God created and intended me to be; and nobody yells at me, dismisses me, or fixes me. They just let me be me, and when I do cry out for help, they offer some of the best insight and wisdom God could provide through sisters. I love these women. I love being able to be with them and not try to fix them....I love practicing (and I need a lot of practice) letting them be themselves and not always trying to offer advice, rather just listening.

I realized about two months after first attending my L.I.F.E. group that I had found a safe place to discuss my issues. It took another month or two for me to realize I had found a home. Who knew it was possible? I certainly didn't think so....I mean, I had spent my life judging others and being fearful of how they were judging me. There were so many masks I wore: different sizes, different shapes, and I could transition from one to the other quite professionally. I certainly didn't discuss feelings - my upbringing trained me well. Feelings just got in the way and prevented me from being successful, appearing educated, professional, and having it all together.

What sad thinking.

I remember the first night I attended a L.I.F.E. group meeting. I was ashamed, scared, disappointed and angry that I had to be there. Don't get me wrong, I chose to be there....but I was angry I had gotten to the point of needing to make the choice. It all makes sense in retrospect, but that night I was far from hopeful. Debbie was the facilitator that night and after making all the introductions, and being welcomed by the group, she said to us, "This is the envelope we pass around. L.I.F.E. Ministries asks for a meaningful contribution each time you attend. Part of our healing is understanding that we are important enough to invest in our own healing and wanting to give back to the ministry that has provided this safe place for us to gather together and create authentic relationships." She went on to say as a first time visitor no contribution was necessary, but to keep it in mind for next week. Strangely enough, in my heart I already wanted to contribute. Deep down, I realized what a fortunate person I was to have a place to go for healing that was already established. I remember thanking God that I lived in a city large enough to have a support group already established and I wondered what it must be like for women who are in small towns with nobody to discuss the pain of addiction. I really WAS grateful I had a place to go where other women had gone before me. Maybe it was because I had prayed for God to send me a mentor, maybe I realized the depth of the uniqueness this group provided. Either way, I was just plain grateful.

Which leads me to the garden. We all know that the ground where we are planting anything must have good soil. We know it must have sunlight and it must have water. Without these elements, what we plant simply dies. As I see it, I am the soil. God provides the sunlight, the water, the seeds; and He has certainly begun breaking up the soil in my heart. I will grow because He loves me enough to provide these things. However, when I participate in His work, it is like I am watering my own yard and I grow so much faster. I join Him in His work, which is reason enough, but I also get the benefits!

REASONS the giving of a meaningful contribution is important to us and the ministry we are benefiting from:

1. We need to invest in our own healing. We must value ourselves as God values us. Making a regular contribution allows us to both physically and emotionally acknowledge our value.
How much more do we appreciate something when we have worked hard and contributed to its success than when something is just given to us?

2. We are privileged to have a group to attend and we want to support the ability for other groups to evolve throughout the world. Only by supporting L.I.F.E. Ministries, saying "Yes, this group helps me!"; and the people who have not only gone before us but have also paved the way for this group, can advancement be accomplished.

3. Years ago, this group would not have existed. The funds are an acknowledgement of the gratitude in my heart to the men and women who broke ground on this addiction. The people who chose to step into the light, struck the first blow into the ground to break up the soil and create a place for the seeds to be planted, watered and grow despite their own shame. I want to honor them and I want the ground to continue being fertile for the heartbroken who are yet to come.

I am truly grateful to no longer be wandering in the desert, praying for water to quench my thirst. God lead me to a place and an organization that participates in what He is doing to heal His children. L.I.F.E. Ministries is actively tilling, planting and watering gardens all over the world. I like to think of God's smile as the sunshine that makes us all stretch and grow towards Him. It is my pleasure to honor Him and my fellow gardeners by contributing each week.

Successful Facilitating: Intake Interview (Summer 2007 Newsletter)

When someone wants to enter a L.I.F.E. group, an intake interview is conducted to ensure that the individual is where they need to be, and to familiarize them with how the group works. It is important to make sure the group can meet the needs of the candidate. Established group member welcome newcomers with less hesitation when a candidate comes prepared to take recovery seriously. Participants accept the facilitator's intake Interview as a sort of initiation. Also, the newcomer feels more comfortable taking that initial step through the door to enter their first meeting. Newcomers feel frightened, overwhelmed, and timid. This intake interview can reduce everyone's fears to a manageable level.

During the intake interview, the facilitator should start with their own story. The story should include: First time exposure to porn or other sexual experience, shameful feelings, needing help, finding a L.I.F.E. group, the start of their journey to present day. This will help the newcomer relate to the facilitator by hearing that the facilitator has been where they are now, and the newcomer will gain hope through the facilitator's testimony and time in recovery.

The facilitator can explain the dynamics of the meeting, information about the resources used, and how the meaningful contribution is used each week to help yourself and others. This will give the newcomer insight into the meetings.
During the intake interview, if the newcomer is comfortable, they can share a bit about their addiction. This allows them to open their heart a bit, voice the problem(s), practice being vulnerable and feel a bit of relief even before their first meeting. It also gives the facilitator a chance to guide the newcomer about what is OK and not OK to say in a meeting (i.e. no graphic details, confidentiality, "said here stays here", etc.).

The Intake interview has been a wonderful tool in helping the meetings to remain safe for all participants.

Upcoming Conference. We are excited to attend the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference this September! Every two years, this important event gives L.I.F.E. the opportunity to meet thousands of counselors and pastors, and this will be our fourth time there. We were among the first exhibitors to openly address the subject of sexual addiction, and hundreds have visited our dougle booth over the years. Many have expressed their appreciation for the work of L.I.F.E. Ministries during the three previous conferences, and it will be great to see these old friends. While sales of L.I.F.E. Guides at this event have grown each time we’ve attended: getting the issue of sexual addiction and the L.I.F.E. Ministry program in front of these attendees is critical to our growth. There will be about ten of our staff and ministry leaders present to meet and greet the attending pastors and counselors. Successful Facilitating: Strong Relationships

Being a growth oriented facilitator involves not only moderating a group each week, but becoming a relational Christian. Strong relationships in the Christian community will develop resources for the facilitator and creates a referral source. Your future members from the community will approach these referral sources needing help with their own sexual integrity.

I recommend developing strong relationships with Christian Counselors, Senior Pastors, Church staff and lay leaders. This may seem difficult to some facilitators, but if God has called you to counsel in addiction, these relationships will only benefit His kingdom.

One may find it easy to meet and introduce themselves over lunch. Pick one day per week and invite a different member of the Christian community to lunch. When calling to invite them, tell them that you facilitate a support group in the area and that you would like to take him or her to lunch. If they hesitate, let them know that you simply want to introduce your ministry and answer any questions without taking up a lot of their time. Make it known that you want to be a "resource" for them...not a burden. During lunch, tell your own story. Share how your own recovery from sexual addiction has brought you to this point and what a support group has meant to you.

Those that you already have contact with or an established relationship with, make yourself available to pray with them about confidential issues. Whether it is for a member of their congregation, a client, themselves, or someone else hurting – offer to be a part of their prayer team. E-Mail them that you just prayed for them or prayed for a specific issue that concerns them. A hand written note has a positive effect.

Keep these relationships informed by providing them with copies of your newsletter, tell them about new resources like the “Sexual Addiction and the Church: Facing the Fire” DVD, and give them access to ministry resources that you already have. Offer to loan out DVD or CD sets that explain more about the ministry to keep them in the know.

If your group hosts open meetings, invite these referral sources so that they may experience what you are doing first hand. They may be reluctant to come, but continue inviting them anyway.

If you have a call to counsel in this ministry, establishing relationships in your local Christian community can impact more lives, create resources for you, and further connect the different ministries in His kingdom.

Alliance Against Pornography

“Jesus Loves Porn Stars!” You may have heard this phrase before from XXX Church. 3X Church is a ministry dedicated to raising awareness about the affects of pornography on God’s people. They travel to churches to speak about the issue of pornography. They setup at adult entertainment trade shows to hand out Bibles with “Jesus Loves Porn Stars!” emblazed on the cover. Craig Gross and his team also conduct debates with Ron Jeremy (long-time adult entertainment industry giant) on college campuses.

L.I.F.E. Ministries and XXX Church have joined forces to further the battle against pornography. Every month, millions of internet pornography sites are visited and with 3X Church’s awareness initiatives and the L.I.F.E. Guide series to combat it, we can remove shame and sexual impurity one addict at a time.

L.I.F.E. Ministries is a Christ-centered support group ministry whose mission is to encourage, empower, and equip God’s people to live everyday in sexual integrity. L.I.F.E. created the L.I.F.E. Guide series of workbooks with editor Dr. Mark Laaser, the foremost Christian expert in sexual addiction recovery.

In April, 3X Church will release its co-branded L.I.F.E. Guides. These guides retain the material of the original guide, but have an introduction from 3X Church and a unique cover to match their ministry’s look. They will take these guides across the country to offer not only awareness of the affects of pornography, but also to give people a tool to combat it.

Exposing Faith Through the XXX Church

A survey done by Christianity Today magazine found 37 percent of pastors admit to struggling with pornography.

HOLLYWOOD - Two young California pastors say the church isn't facing up to one of the nastiest temptations facing most believers these days, which is pornography. So these men have started up a controversial ministry to take on porn.
Pornography's gone big time. Thirty million people are now logging on to some 300,000 porn Web sites daily.

Craig Gross of xxxchurch.com (Triple X Church) said, "We've talked to people who've lost jobs because they've been looking at it at work. We've talked to people who've gone bankrupt. We've talked to people whose marriages have been destroyed."

With pornography becoming more of a radical problem in society, at least a couple of southern California pastors have decided it needs to be dealt with...radically."

So Mike Foster and Gross started up a web ministry that calls itself "The number one Christian porn site." And they set up booths at America's biggest porn conventions. The purpose? To help people break free from porn.

Foster said, "I think it's time for Christians to be aware of the issues and be pro-active, and not simply let the wave of pornography sweep over us."

And it does hit Christians.

Gross said, "We found that the church and the secular world, there's really no difference in who's struggling." For instance, a survey of men at a Promise Keepers rally showed half had looked at porn in the week just before the rally.

"For so long it kind of was the dirty little secret," Gross continued.. "The church really wanted to pretend and hoped that this thing just goes away."

But a survey done by Christianity Today magazine found 37 percent of pastors admit to struggling with pornography.

Gross said, "And that's why I think they don't want to talk about it amongst the congregations, because it's something they're personally struggling with."

One way to fight back is the xxxchurch.com, a web address deliberately picked to lure porn-seekers who type in the letters "XXX."

"And if you are personally struggling, go to this site, and you are going to realize, you're not alone, that there are other people out there struggling with the same things," said Gross. "We have sections for wives, sections for parents, sections for teenagers. One of them is a prayer wall where you can post your prayers and read about how porn is really affecting others. We have an 800 number where you can call in."

Another freebie that xxxchurch.com offers is "accountability software" that shoots off a biweekly list of web sites you've been visiting to two people of your choosing.

Gross says, "It takes away the secrecy, and a lot of the problems that people have on-line, if you're willing to let someone else see what you see."

The other major purpose of xxxchurch is to let porn industry professionals know Jesus loves them. Gross and Foster have been to several porn conventions, accompanied by their mascot Rex the Rabbit, their answer to the Playboy Bunny.

At these porn shows, they pass out postcards that say "Jesus loves porn stars." And it is this outreach that has caused outrage in some Christian circles.

Foster said, "We have people going 'how do you go to a porn show and keep your purity and, ya know, keep from falling into it?' And the reality is, we're just two guys going to a place where Jesus would be. The church, for the most part, thinks people are going to come to us. That's not the reality of the situation. We have to go to them."

It was at one such convention that Gross and Foster first crossed paths with "Jimmy D" DiGiorgio, an actual porn director.

DiGiorgio said, "I've probably directed in excess of a hundred adult movies." Jimmy D sat in his booth for three days observing the pastors in theirs. "And I can't for the life of me figure out what they're all about," said DiGiorgio. "I saw 'xxxchurch, number one Christian porn site. Finally I got up and walked across the way and sat down and spoke with them for awhile, and I found out they were like missionaries in a sense, coming to the porn convention. 'Oh, I get it. You guys are like Jesus walking with the lepers.'"

Just on a lark, this director of such porn flicks as "Lesbian Talent Scouts" offered to shoot, without charge, a commercial for the pastors.

DiGiorgio said, "'You're probably not going to accept this offer,' and they said, 'Why wouldn't we? You're going to shoot it for free!'"

The team decided to aim the ad at kids, because they are getting hit with porn at younger and younger ages - the average age when they first see it is now 11.

Part of the commercial read, "Have you come across a bunch of magazines in your dad's closet that show pictures of lots of naked mommies? Did it make you feel kind of yucky?" The ad was done, the friendship cemented.

"They're great guys and they're actually fun to hang out with," commented DiGiorgio.

Foster said, "The reality is the porn industry, for the most part, are nice people who are just normal people just like church people, just like me and Craig, and we've actually struck up some great relationships with them."

Meanwhile, the pastors just go on being outrageous. They decided to turn their car into one huge billboard for xxxchurch.com, much to the dismay of quite a few churchgoers.

"We've actually been to a couple of churches where they've actually called the police on us because they were scared of the car," said Foster.

DiGiorgio remarked, "They take a lot of heat for what they do. They're also quite outrageous in their approach to it. They have that Barnum and Bailey kind of thing going for them."

But does any of this work? Have they seen any fruit from this at all?

Foster said, "Well, actually one of the fruits is standing right there. We spent a lot of time talking about Jesus, talking about Jimmy, and where his relationship is at with the Lord."

When asked if the pastors were getting through to him, DiGiorgio replied, "I'm sure that you and your viewers would love to have me say 'yes.' But unfortunately, 'no. I feel the faith that they have, okay, if you will, I sense that about them. I can feel it. It's a real thing. It's almost a tangible thing. Has it become contagious to me? I have to answer 'no.'"

Foster admits Gross and he are not seeing any converts to Christ yet in the porn industry, but they're belligerently optimistic.

Foster said, "And so it's a tough ground that we're planting seeds on, but I really think, with God's power, we're going to see a lot of great fruit come from that."

The web site's been much more successful. More than 50 million hits so far. Many believers back the pastors' efforts, but says Foster, "...then there's the other side of the church that thinks we're complete nut-zos, and we're doing the work of the devil."

But Gross says the church needs to get the log out of its own eye before judging others. He said, "For Christians, our message is really clean up your lives, because we think porn and sin keeps you from doing the work that God wants you to be doing."

The Variable Drive to Recovery

Dear Support Group Facilitator,

Greetings! We would like to thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to the members of your Support Group. We pray the Lord will inspire you in spirit, mind and body to continue helping others to Live In Freedom Everyday!

Every addict responds to the challenge of recovery differently, largely in part because each person has a unique perception of what has happened to them. Some will naturally minimize it, others will outright dismiss it. Much of this can be tied to our human nature in coping with crisis, trauma or dilemma. Each person will cope differently. This interesting dynamic will create a variable drive for recovery that can be applied to some well known laws of nature.

Cause and effect is the relationship between two things when one thing makes something else happen. For example, if we eat too much food and do not exercise, we gain weight. Sexual addiction can be an obvious example of this principle. If we persist in acting out sexually over time, our lives and the other people in them will be negatively impacted. This negative impaction leads us to another behavioral principle in recovery.

Isaac Newton’s third law of motion says that “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” In recovery from sexual addiction we can formulate a concept using Newton’s third law to say; “recovery is directly proportional to the index rating of experienced trauma.” In other words, the sex addict’s perception of how serious, traumatic and destructive the action has been will usually dictate how responsive he or she will be to recovery. More simply stated:

The motivation, desire and intensity of your recovery efforts is in direct proportion to how extreme or traumatic your consequences were.

The acting out is either disclosed, discovered or intervened upon. Some of us were facing loss of jobs, marriages and in some severe cases, our freedom. Others were threatened with consequences that usually never came. Perhaps we remember an addict coming to our meeting who said; “My wife will leave me if I don’t come here.” Or perhaps it was a motive of monetary losses that compelled some to seek recovery. The bottom line was that denial really held the motive, if you didn’t think that what you had done was all that bad, you generally weren’t going to go the lengths called for by many facilitators and programs for those who have truly felt the burden of the destructive consequences.

One of the first questions I ask someone who says they are ready to commit to a program of recovery is; “What have you got to lose?” How seriously some people will take recovery, the efforts they are willing to apply, is directly tied to what they have to lose. Those who stay superficial in recovery are those who don’t have much to lose. Real recovery begins when we “hit bottom” (which is defined differently for each individual). Hitting bottom or suffering loss is part of the process.

These principles are for you, the facilitator to think about. You are faced with the task of discerning which people in your groups are really going to go the journey and which ones will flee when the rubber starts to hit the road. Denial will more often be the obstacle for motivation to recover. Those addicts who don’t think that what they’ve done was all that bad will generally resist the lengths called for by many facilitators. Thinking about these dynamics in human behavior can help us with how to direct our resources, and allocate our efforts. As long as we remain open to the Holy Spirit’s gift of discernment, we will be able to identify those sexual addicts in whom is “The Variable Drive For Recovery.”

Abstinence Contract

Hi Everyone,

I'm intersted to find out how many of you have commited to an abstinence contract or have facilitated them in your group?

What are your thoughts? In my groups, my wife and I have encouraged many couples to do one and I have made it a challenge to all men individually who make commitments to my meetings. Some have discussed it with their therapists and recieved negative feedback about it.

When I attended a men's workshop in Nashville three years ago, Mark Laaser said it was an essential component to my journey. I know it was something that both my wife and I wanted to do, it was rough! It was suggested to be ninety days in length and we didn't make it the first time. We failed around the ninth week, but undeterred, we did it again. All in all, we abstained for nearly six months.

I welcome any thoughts any of you may have on the subject. Take care, stay on the wall.

journeys: stories of despair, hope, sadness, and healing

It had been a hard day at work and I just wanted to get home and unwind. I went through the normal ritual of greeting everyone as I came home and had supper. It was already late so the kids went to bed and my wife was sucked into her favorite show. I thought to myself, “I’ll do a little work on the computer, “which was in our bedroom. By this time I began to fantasize about the sites I would visit and what I might find. I turned and could still see my wife watching her show so I began to view porn with the bedroom door open. What do you have there on your screen?” she said as she entered the room. I was still looking at porn and masturbating as she entered the room. And my recovery began as I had now hit a new low.

You see I had confessed my “little problem” on occasion. I even went to counseling and was on medication for depression. These helped me but did little to address my addiction that had yet to be diagnosed. Over the prior 15+ years as a Christian I had struggled with porn and masturbation in varying levels and tried to quit countless times. By this point I was in a spiritual low and ready for help.

A brother in our congregation told me about L.I.F.E. Ministries and encouraged me to attend. I made the connection and began going to group the following Monday. Within a few weeks I committed to the 90 days of abstinence and my wife also began to attend meetings. I tell you it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The support and friendship I received from my group leader and the other attendees were crucial to my success. Even with all the support I had a slip-up in mid-December after 60+ days of sobriety. Having to confess it to my wife was devastating. It was very difficult going through the Christmas season with this on my heart. I felt like I was in the doghouse with everyone.

I was encouraged to continue in the work and not give into unhealthy shame. I never stopped attending the meetings, journaling and assignments in the workbook. There have been some close calls but I’ve been sober since that date. On one occasion right before my new 90 day mark the cable company decided to surprise me with free paid channels during a weekend. The temptation was great but GOD helped me say no. I told my wife the next day and we promptly cancelled our cable. To this day we only have antennae TV as a boundary we set up.

I do regret all the time I lost viewing porn and the lack of heart level intimacy between my wife and I that was destroyed by my acting out. In addition there were financial losses due to the time I spent on the internet instead of at work. Since I cannot change the past I choose to learn from it and choose to practice healthy behaviors I learned and keep learning with L.I.F.E.

Encourage, Empower, and Equip: Group Facilitators

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

We would like to express our gratefulness to all the Group Facilitators who are giving their time, hearts, and commitment to continue helping those in recovery. In today’s busy world it is difficult to find balance between work, family, and church. Many find it difficult to take on a volunteer role such as Group Facilitator. Your hearts have led you to make time in life to help others that (in most cases) are where you have been. We applaud and appreciate your commitment to those seeking freedom from sexual sin.

He is the one who gave these gifts to the church; the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ. (Ephesians 4: 11-13)

L.I.F.E. empowers and relies on Group Facilitators because Headquarters staff and volunteers cannot be in every city around the country! God has chosen you to take your gifts and experiences and help others down their path of recovery. Your experiences help you to relate, encourage, and further your group. Another vital role of Facilitators is to build up new Facilitators from their Group Members so that they may reach the next level of recovery and help other recovering addicts.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do. (2 Timothy 3: 16-17)

God has blessed us with His word. L.I.F.E. Ministries uses God’s word to equip Group Facilitators with biblically-driven resources. The L.I.F.E. Guide workbook series is based on the Nehemiah Principles and Dr. Mark Laaser’s Seven Principles for Living In Freedom Everyday, rather than the secular 12-step programs that exist.

Group Facilitators are the leaders on the battlefield of sexual addiction. Your role allows our ministry to reach as many of God’s people as we possibly can. Your encouraging words hearten Group Members. Your empowerment spreads hope and healing to those seeking integrity. Your resources are based on God’s word so that you may facilitate in His way.
